Text Book
This year we ordered a custom version of our textbook which will be sold at the UCSD bookstore at a signfinicant discount. It should be in stock in time for the class:
The Analysis and Design of Linear Circuits, 6th Edition (UCSD Custom), R. E. Thomas, A. J. Rosa and G. J. Toussaint, Wiley 2009. ISBN 9780470953457
This custom version contains only a selection of chapters from the standard hardcover version of the book:
The Analysis and Design of Linear Circuits, 6th Edition, R. E. Thomas, A. J. Rosa and G. J. Toussaint, Wiley 2009. ISBN 0-470-38330-5
Of course you can buy the hardcover version or you may also choose to buy used earlier editions, such as
The Analysis and Design of Linear Circuits, 5th Edition, R. E. Thomas and A. J. Rosa, Wiley 2006. ISBN 0-471-76095-1
Homework will be assigned from the 6th Edition though. 6th Edition is on the Science and Engineering Library Reserves.
Past Years Websites
You might want to check out the Fall 2009 website Winter 2009 website, the Fall 2008 website, the Winter 2008 website, the Fall 2007 website, the Summer 2007 website, or the Fall 2006 website, where you will find links to older 02'-05' websites for this class. Check them out if you want to know how the exams will look like!
What's next?
Check out the following linear circuit experiment from MAE171a, Mechanical Engineering Laboratory I (prepared by Professor Raymond de Callafon). At the end MAE 140 you should be ready to perform this experiment successfully and follows this lecture with ease.

Grades
You should be able to check out your homework and midterm
grades on webct.
Please check them out regularly to make sure your homework is being
graded/transcribed correctly!
Grades Formula
GRADE = MAX(0.2 * HOMEWORK + 0.3 * MIDTERM + 0.5 * FINAL, FINAL)

Homework
Hand in on Thursday class.
20% deduction for lateness by one day without reason, else 100%.
Solutions will be posted on this web site.
Please turn in a readable and organized homework. This is
a big class! Here is a suggestion:
- Write your name and student ID on top of each and every page;
- Start answering a question always on the top of the page.
Homework #1
T R & T,
1.16, 1.21, 1.23,
2.3, 2.7, 2.13, 2.16,
2.22, 2.29, 2.34

IMPORTANT: Please solve problems 3.12, 3.13 and 3.14, using
nodal analysis, not mesh analysis as stated! You are not
required to use MATLAB or ORCAD in this course. If a homework
problem has an item involving MATLAB or ORCAD you do not have
to do that item. For instance in prob. 3.13 you do not have to
do parts b) and e). You have to do all other parts using nodal
analysis.
