Text Book

This quarter we ordered a custom version of our textbook which will be sold at the UCSD bookstore at a signfinicant discount. It should be in stock in time for the class:

The Analysis and Design of Linear Circuits, 7th Edition (UCSD Custom), R. E. Thomas, A. J. Rosa and G. J. Toussaint, Wiley 2012. ISBN 9781118516553

This custom version contains only a selection of chapters from the standard hardcover version of the book:

The Analysis and Design of Linear Circuits, 6th Edition, R. E. Thomas, A. J. Rosa and G. J. Toussaint, Wiley 2012. ISBN 978-1118065587

Of course you can buy the hardcover version or you may also choose to buy used earlier editions dating back to the 4th edition.

Homework will be assigned from the 7th Edition though. 7th Edition is on the Science and Engineering Library Reserves.

Past Years Websites

You might want to check out the Winter 2012 website, the Summer II 2011 website, the Fall 2010 website, the Fall 2009 website, the Winter 2009 website, the Fall 2008 website, the Winter 2008 website, the Fall 2007 website, the Summer 2007 website, or the Fall 2006 website, where you will find links to older 02'-05' websites for this class. Check them out if you want to know how the exams will look like!

What's next?

Check out the following linear circuit experiment from MAE171a, Mechanical Engineering Laboratory I (prepared by Professor Raymond de Callafon). At the end MAE 140 you should be ready to perform this experiment successfully and follows this lecture with ease.

Homework

Hand in on Thursday class.
20% deduction for lateness by one day without reason, else 100%.
Solutions will be posted on this web site.
Please turn in a readable and organized homework. This is a big class! Here is a suggestion:

Homework #1

T R & T, 1.13, 1.14, 1.21, 2.3, 2.5, 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, 2.15, 2.21
Need a solution?
Due: 10/04/2012

IMPORTANT: I inadvertently left out the statement for problem 2.15 from the homework scan. Here it is:

For the circuit in Figure P2-15:

  1. Identify the nodes and at least two loops.
  2. Identify any elements connected in series or in parallel.
  3. Write KCL and KVL connection equations for the circuit.

Homework #2

T R & T, 2.30, 2.33, 2.36, 2.37, 2.54, 2.58, 2.61, 2.68, 2.72, 2.75
Need a solution?
Due: 10/11/2012

Homework #3

T R & T, 3.47, 3.52, 3.58, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.13, 3.17 b) and e), 3.22 b) and d)
Need a solution?
Due: 10/18/2012
IMPORTANT: Please solve problems 3.13, 3.17, and 3.22 using nodal analysis, even if the problem statement asks for mesh analysis!
IMPORTANT: You are not required to use MATLAB or ORCAD in this course. If a homework problem has un item involving MATLAB or ORCAD you do not have to do that item.

Homework #4

T R & T, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.13, 3.17 a), c) and d), 3.20, 3.22 a), c) and d), 3.37, 3.39.
Need a solution?
Due: 10/25/2012
IMPORTANT: Please solve problems 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 using mesh analysis, even if the problem statement asks for nodal analysis!
IMPORTANT: You are not required to use MATLAB or ORCAD in this course. If a homework problem has un item involving MATLAB or ORCAD you do not have to do that item with MATLAB. You can solve it by hand.

Homework #5
